Do you have plans for when your body and your baby no longer need your placenta?

Haven't thought that far?

Know exactly what you want to do?

Somewhere in between?

In many cultures, the placenta is not simply discarded as medical waste. The placenta is recognised as an  organ of great significance.
It is the only organ that develops and grows within another organ. It is responsible for growing a healthy baby. It is the bridge between a mother and her baby in the womb. In medieval times it was said  to nurture an unborn baby’s body and soul, in Indonesia it  is called  the  brother or sister, in Nepal it is known as bucha-co-satthi, meaning  baby's friend, it is honoured as truly unique and amazing.
For thousands of years there have been rituals surrounding the burial of the placenta.

In Chinese culture the placenta is considered a powerful medicine.
Some women will eat a small piece of the placenta raw at the birth to avoid haemorrhage.

Although currently there have been no wide ranging scientific studies to evaluate anecdotal evidence, women today have reported that ingesting placenta can contribute to :

     Decrease in baby blues
     Decrease in postnatal depression
     Increase and enrich breast milk.
     Increase  in energy
     Decrease  postnatal bleeding.
     Decrease  iron deficiency
     Decrease  sleep disorders

Placenta capsules are taken to support a healthy postpartum recovery
and contain nothing but your own placenta
.

New mothers who are well supported and well nourished usually recover quickly after birth but this cannot always be guaranteed. Having placenta capsules on hand is a safe natural way to promote postpartum wellness.  More and more women today are no longer discarding their placentas but choosing to honour their strength and health.

How can the placenta be used?

Picture

Ingesting placenta can be done in a  number of ways but encapsulation is the most  popular.

The placenta is steamed, dried, ground to a powder, and  placed in capsules for the woman to take for the first  few weeks after birth and  later in life to boost energy  levels.

A  unique homeopathic tincture can be also be made and used throughout your child’s life, and yours. It is said be to be useful during times of low energy, and hormonal imbalance, including menopause.

A small amount of your powdered placenta can also be added to an aromatic balm to promote healing.  It is handed blended with certified organic coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax and pure essential oils.

Can I have a permanent reminder?

Tree of Life, watercolour & ink on paper, by Vickie Hingston-Jones c2012

Yes, a unique commissioned art work can be made from your placenta.
Each original work shows the distinctive size, shape and appearance of every placenta, and also reminds us why they are referred to as "The Tree of Life”.
Paintings are hand painted using only highest quality artists’ paint and ink on acid free  paper.
These beautiful works of art are delivered in archive quality enclosures that will protect them for life.
Artworks can be viewed on the Placenta Art page. Vickie will discuss background colours and style when your work is commissioned.

It is possible to produce artwork from photographs or frozen placentas prior to ceremonial burial if requested.

100 YEARS : 100 GREAT WOMEN

As part of  the celebrations for the centenary of Canberra, UN Women honoured 100  women who have made a difference to Canberra at the 2013 International Women's  Day lunch.

To be nominated, women must have made a significant contribution to  Canberra. The women who were nominated were not all high profile. Most were quiet achievers and influencers who helped shape Canberra.

Vickie was proud and honoured to be selected as one of the 100 Great Women and  extends her congratulations to the other 99.
